İstanbul Onkoloji Enstitüsü A study was performed on 50 healthy females and 44 patients with histologically proven breast carcinoma concerning the levels of CEA, CA: 19-9, CA: 12-5, lipid-bound sialic acid (LSA) and protein-bound and perchlorate extracted L- Fucose (PEF). The levels of these markers were significantly elevated in the patient group being 27,69 + 28,48 mg/ml (N:l,77 + 0.72), 38.38 +22.71 u/ml (N: 5.26 + 78), 47.49 + 34.66 u/ml (N:4.02 + 1.82), 15.08 + 7.40 ml/dl (N: 12.08 + 7.01) and 3.95 + 2.09 ml/dl (N: 2.19 + 0.99) respectively. It was concluded that PEF and CA: 19-9 were more sensitive in detecting the presence of breast carcinoma than of the others and would be more reliable criteria in the evaluation of the disease state regarding remission or relapse.
